Create your “Unique Message”

I have to say, before I started my own business, my perception of the word brand was a business logo and I don’t think I was the only one to think this. I now know that branding is far more than just a logo. The brand, your brand, is everything to do with you and your business; from the way you dress to the way you talk about what you do. Every single step in your business needs to follow your vision and values.

One of the most difficult questions to answer, when networking, is “what is it that you do?” I find that a lot of people are actually experts in their field. However, when it comes to talking about what they do, they are not sure where to start.

I did a little exercise with a client who was looking at penetrating a new market. My client wasn’t sure how she should approach businesses about her products. We first looked at her story; what it was that brought her to start her business in the first place. Remember that “people buy from people” and being able to tell a compelling and authentic story about yourself, your business and your product or service, can easily influence and convince people to work with you.

Next we looked at her value and vision and how she could describe what it was she did in 10 words. Yes, just 10 words, but these 10 words must be crystal clear and completely focused on what you offer your clients. What is so unique about your services or products? What are the benefits of your service or product? How can you add value by exceeding their expectation every time? What will dramatically differentiate you from your competitors?

I tell you what, once you have determined your “Core Unique Business Message”, networking will be so much easier for you. It will give you greater confidence to go out there and grow your visibility. Use your Core Unique Business Message everywhere you go; from your email signature to your business cards. You are the expert in your field so now you can tell your story. You can build confidence and create relationships. You will build credibility and trust. This will result in a greater number of clients and increased sales. You will also have a more vibrant business.
